ABOUT ABOUT

A powerful and poignant meditation on birth, death and points in between, MIDDLETOWN is a deeply moving and funny play that explores the universe of a small American town. As a friendship develops between longtime resident John Dodge and new arrival Mary Swanson, the lives of the inhabitants of Middletown intersect in strange and compelling ways.  The work of playwright Will Eno has won the Obie Award, the Lortel Award for Outstanding Play, and the Drama Desk Award. Eno was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

Called by Christopher Isherwood of the New York Times “Samuel Beckett for the Jon Stewart generation,” Eno said he wanted to write “something that was a statement about what life feels like, to me, on earth.”  MIDDLETOWN is the kind of town where, as one character puts it, “the main street is called Main Street. And the side streets are named after trees. People come, people go. Crying, by the way, in both directions.”

“Delicate, moving, piercing, tart, funny, gorgeous. Mr. Eno’s gift may be unmatched among writers of his generation. Glimmers from start to finish.”
